Topic: The Opioid Epidemic: How We Got Here and The CDC Guidelines to Help Us Out

Topic Overview: The live activity will provide an overview of the evolution of opioid use in medical practice, the factors that contributed to the opioid epidemic, and evidence-based strategies used to address it. Participants will review appropriate pain management principles and the updated CDC guidelines to support safe, effective opioid prescribing and improve patient care.

Objectives:

• Discuss the history of opioids and how the epidemic developed
• Understand some tactics used to combat the epidemic
• Review the pain response and ways to use opioids appropriately
• Review of the updated pain management guidelines produced by the CDC
