Call to Action!

The SCMA recently learned that the Smart Snacks in Schools program is in jeopardy. The program requires that all foods sold at school whether a la carte, in the school store, at fundraisers, or in vending machines meet certain nutritional standards. It has recently come to our attention that this program may be short-lived based on recent financial forecasts from the 2014-2015 school year. For physicians interested in supporting keeping healthy snacks in schools, we encourage you to send comments during the open comment period to Dr. Juanita Bowens-Seabrook, Department of Education, Office of Nutrition Programs, by e-mail to JBowens@ed.sc.gov by September 22.
