2013 SCMA Annual Meeting Highlights

The 2013 Annual Meeting of the South Carolina Medical Association was a huge success! Multiple CME sessions were held, important resolutions were passed in the House of Delegates, and we inaugurated our 152nd president, Dr. Bruce Snyder. We owe a huge thank you to all of our members, exhibitors and other attendees who helped make the success of this meeting possible. 152nd President Inaugurated - Dr. Bruce Snyder
On Saturday, April 27, we elected our 152nd president of the association-- Dr. Bruce Snyder, a vascular surgeon from Greenville. If you were not in attendance, we encourage you to click here to read Dr. Snyder’s inaugural speech. During his presidential year, Dr. Snyder plans to focus his efforts on providing the appropriate tools to further develop South Carolina physicians as the leaders and voice of health care, increasing awareness and providing support for access to care issues, and providing a constant presence to our state’s physicians to cultivate conversations about South Carolina health care policy.
 We are positive that Dr. Snyder will serve the SCMA well--- Congratulations!

SCMA Alliance Celebrates 90 Years and Elects New President
On Friday, April 26, the SCMA Alliance celebrated 90 years in existence and also elected their newest president, Mrs. Angela Lorenz. During her year as president, Mrs. Lorenz plans to focus on an issue that started with the SCMA Alliance--- childhood obesity. Through their Commit to Be Fit Program, the Alliance will be working with our state’s children to inspire and provide resources for healthy lifestyles. New Leaders
This year, while we said goodbye to several of our leaders, we welcomed new ones for the upcoming year. Our new leaders include: Dr. Bruce Snyder, president; Dr. H. Tim Pearce, president-elect; Dr. Larry Ware, Chairman; Dr. Richard Osman, Vice-chairman; Dr. Todd Schlesinger, Member-at-Large; and Dr. Andrew Pate, immediate past president. New Board of Trustees members include; Dr. Mayes DuBose (Seventh District), Dr. James McCoy (First District), Dr. Frank Clark (Resident Trustee), and Mr. Andrew Vaughan (Medical Student Trustee). Congratulations to our new leaders and THANK YOU to all of our previous leaders on the Board of Trustees for their service!

Congrats to Our Award Winners
On Saturday, April 27, we also honored several physicians and friends of medicine for their exceptional dedication to the practice of medicine. Awards were as follows: The Spartanburg County Medical Society was presented the SCMA Service to the Community Award for their volunteerism in the Habitat Humanity Project of Spartanburg. Dr. Palmira S. Snape was awarded the SCMA Physician of the Year Award for Community Service for her dedication and service to the Greenville community. Dr. Jerome Kurent, a physician from Charleston, was presented the annual Roe Award for his winning article in The Journal, entitled Striving for Excellence in Palliative and End of Life Care. The winners for the 2013 SCMA Resident and Student Poster Competition included: 1st Place – Shauna Jenkins; 2nd Place – Ryan and Eric Singhi; and 3rd Place – tie between Joe Collins and Rahul Loungani.

Important Business Passed in House of Delegates
Many important resolutions were brought forth during the House of Delegates which took place on Friday, April 26, and again on Sunday, April 28. As always, the focus of Annual Meeting continues to be on conducting business on the behalf of medicine. Several resolutions were voted on during the House of Delegates, which the SCMA will be carrying out throughout the upcoming year. To see a full list of resolutions that were passed, click here.

Third Annual Silent Auction was a Success!
During the 2013 Annual Meeting, we held our third annual Silent Auction to benefit the SCMA Foundation. The Silent Auction was a huge success and raised over $1,000 to support future South Carolina physicians.
